Ubuntu Pilots

The Pilots

Fossbox has carried out 4 informal pilots using Ubuntu in small, front-line charities and social enterprises.

These ranged from installation of complete new networks to installing laptops for use in projects. Overall, the outcomes have been positive, despite some teething troubles. All of the organisations are still running the Ubuntu set-ups and two are fundraising to expand or upgrade.

What have we learned?

Training, training, TRAINING! Fossbox is currently applying for funding to set up an Ubuntu/Free Software portable training suite which will allow us to provide low-cost workshops in transitioning to the Ubuntu system and also in using Free and Open Source Software on MS Windows PCs for the wider VCS.

The issues we've encountered with printers and compatibility can only be addressed by ensuring that VCS groups are aware when purchasing equipment of the possibility of being 'locked in' to on particular operating system. We are also working on providing information to our Ubuntu users about which equipment manufacturers support Ubuntu properly.

The problems of compatibility with MS Word forms and Open Office are a result of changes which MS made to the open computer languages which underpin cross-platform word-processing. Open Office developers have no control over this. What can be done is to alert Funders to the problem so that they can provide either writeable PDFs or alternative Open Office versions of their forms. We're also working with the Evelyn Oldfield Unit to fundraise for a project to do this vital advocacy work.

'Accidental Techie' Network

Fossbox is also working on setting up an 'accidental techie' network — a woman-friendly environment where the people who 'accidentally' end up looking after their organisation's ICT can exchange knowledge and tips. This will be supported with a live chat channel where more expert help can be called on. We hope to run this with volunteer assistance so that we can keep it free of charge.
